Amherst's Town Meeting voted on May 7, 2007 to form a Sister City relationship with the town of Nyeri, Kenya, to promote social, cultural, and educational exchange for the benefit of both communities.
Nyeri is a town of about 350,000 people in Kenya's Central Highlands, about 90 miles north of Kenya's capital, Nairobi, and west of Mount Keyna, the highest point in the country. It is the birthplace of 2004 Nobel Peace Prize recipient Wangari Maathai, Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki, and four-time Boston Marathon-winner Catherine Ndereba.
The Nyeri Sister City Committee is a group of citizens from the Amherst area that seeks to form closer ties between Amherst and Nyeri. The Committee is actively seeking representatives from the Amherst community.
