Chief Scott P. Livingstone is pleased to announce the promotion of Amherst Police Sergeant Gabriel Ting to the rank of Lieutenant effective October 28, 2016. Lieutenant Ting was promoted after an extensive selection process which included a written examination and interviews with Chief Scott P. Livingstone, Town Manager Paul Bockelman and Human Resources Director Deborah Radway. This promotion will fill the position that was vacated with the promotion of Captain Ronald A. Young.
Lieutenant Ting was appointed as a Patrol Officer with the Amherst Police Department in April of 1997. He was assigned patrol duties until his reassignment to the Detective Bureau in September of 2004. As a Detective, Ting obtained extensive specialized training in criminal investigation, sexual assault and child abuse. During his tenure in the detective bureau he served as a criminal, homicide, arson, sexual assault, hate crimes, background and computer/internet crimes investigator. While assigned to the detective bureau Lieutenant Ting was an Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce member, Kidcare ID Coordinator, Hampshire/Franklin County Drug Task Force member and Member of the Coplogic development team. He has served as a Field Training Officer, Crime Scene Officer, Bicycle Patrol Officer and member of the Warrant Entry Team.
Lieutenant Ting was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in September 2010 and was assigned as a patrol supervisor. He served as the department’s Accreditation Co-Manager, Sergeant Field Training Mentor, and Supervisor of the Riot Arrest Team, Crime Scene and Bicycle Patrol Unit. Lieutenant Ting is an academy instructor for the Massachusetts Police Training Committee in Springfield, MA. He was also a member of the Northwestern D.A.’s Office of Child Sexual Predator Task Force.
Ting received his diploma from Amherst Regional High School in 1991. He graduated in 1997 from the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Academy in Agawam, a member of the 28th Municipal Police Officer Class. Ting received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Massachusetts and a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Western New England College.
Ting is the son of Agnes Ting and the late James Ting of Amherst, Massachusetts. He currently resides in Belchertown with his wife Chelsea and two children.
