Chief Scott P. Livingstone is pleased to announce that Detective Janet M. Lopez of the Amherst Police Department was promoted to the rank of Sergeant effective October 28, 2016. Sergeant Lopez was promoted after an extensive selection process which included a written examination and interviews with Chief Scott P. Livingstone, Town Manager Paul Bockelman and Human Resources Director Deborah Radway. This promotion will fill the position that was vacated with the promotion of Lieutenant Gabriel Ting.
Sergeant Lopez was appointed as a Patrol Officer with the Amherst Police Department on January 19, 1999. She was assigned to patrol duties until her reassignment to the Detective Bureau in 2005. During her tenure in the detective bureau she served as the department’s liaison to the Eastern Hampshire District Court, Juvenile Court, Domestic Violence Intervention Project, Sexual Assault Response Team, and Domestic Violence High Risk Team. While in the detective bureau she performed duties as a Death Scene Investigator, Background Investigator, Address Confidentiality Applicant Assistant, Sexual Assault Investigator, and Sex Offender Registry Board Applicant Manager. As a Detective, Sergeant Lopez obtained extensive specialized training in criminal investigative techniques, sexual assault and domestic violence investigations.
Sergeant Lopez is an Adventure Ropes Course Instructor, a Child Passenger Safety Seat Technician, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Rape Aggression Defense Instructor and is a member of the Amherst Police Department’s Warrant Entry Team and Crisis Intervention Team. She is certified through the Municipal Police Training Committee as a Responding to Sexual Assault Instructor, Dynamics of Addiction Instructor, Police Interaction with Youth Instructor
and teaches at the Western Massachusetts Police Academy in Springfield, MA.
Sergeant Lopez is also a member of the 26th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade based out of Natick, Massachusetts, joining the National Guard in 1995. She currently holds the rank of Sergeant First Class and is assigned as an Operations Sergeant in the PMO section. In 2003, as a squad leader, Sergeant Lopez was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, to Afghanistan. From 2009-2010, as a platoon sergeant, Sergeant Lopez was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, to Iraq.
In 1999 she graduated from the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Academy in Agawam, where she was elected class president. She received a Bachelor of Law Enforcement Degree from Western New England College, Springfield, MA and a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Alpha Phi Sigma, from Boston University, Boston, MA.
