Town of Amherst Department Head Announces Retirement

Linda Chalfant

Following a long and productive career of nearly 30 years, Leisure Services and Supplemental Education Director Linda Chalfant has announced her impending retirement from service to the Town of Amherst. Chalfant’s last day of work is scheduled for Friday, March 24, 2017. "It has been an honor and a privilege working on behalf of the Amherst Community" said Chalfant in her letter to Town Manager Paul Bockelman. In response, Bockelman stated "Linda has devoted her career to enriching the lives of Amherst’s residents, especially our young people. Her commitment to the community is unquestioned and she has built LSSE to what it is today. She deserves our thanks." Chalfant and Assistant Town Manager M. David Ziomek informed the LSSE Commission and LSSE staff of her retirement plans on Thursday.

Under Chalfant’s leadership, the LSSE department has developed and provided high quality programming for youth and adults in addition to signature programs such as Community Theater, the Fourth of July celebrations and the upcoming Winterfest at Cherry Hill Golf Course. Chalfant’s departure comes 6 weeks after the Department welcomes new Youth and Adult Sports Program Director David Grubb, and Chalfant will remain involved with his training and orientation.

Town Manager Paul Bockelman has tasked Assistant Town Manager David Ziomek with guiding the LSSE Commission and Town through the search for new leadership for LSSE, which will begin immediately. In making this assignment, Bockelman stated "LSSE is one of the reasons people love and choose this community. David has participated in LSSE programs as a youth, a coach and as a parent. As an Amherst native, he is the natural person to ensure continuity of the positive momentum and support for LSSE in Amherst that Linda has nurtured. David will certainly work with staff and the Commission to assess department strengths and needs as we move forward, but this should not delay our search for a new LSSE leader." Bockelman says he hopes to have a new Director on board prior to the beginning of Annual Town Meeting.
