ENERGY CONSERVATION & CLIMATE PROTECTION

Energy Conservation Task Force

The Town of Amherst established the Energy Conservation Task Force in the summer of 2000 as part of its participation in the Cities for Climate Protection campaign. The Task Force meets on a monthly basis to discuss and develop the Town of Amherst's Climate Action Plan; create policies and local solutions in addressing global climate change, energy conservation and sustainability; and monitor continued progress. The Task Force is divided into the following subcommittees: Green Fleets and Transportation, Education, Green Purchasing, and Building Operations. Members include representatives from Amherst College, Hampshire College, the University of Massachusetts, various Town departments, and local citizens.

Cities for Climate Protection In the spring of 2000, the Amherst Select Board signed a resolution pledging to participate in the Cities for Climate Protection Program. The program, sponsored by the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI), was launched in response to increased awareness regarding the problem of global climate change. By participating in this program, Amherst has pledged to reduce its emission of greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide and methane, two of the major contributors to this global phenomenon. Energy conservation measures translate into equivalent carbon dioxide emission reductions.

The Five Milestone Process

The Cities for Climate Protection program involves a five-milestone process:

Milestone 1: Conduct a baseline emission inventory for the entire community and municipal operations. Amherst completed this step in August 2001.

Milestone 2: Set an emissions reduction target.

Milestone 3: Develop a Local Climate Action Plan to reach the target reductions. **NEW**Click here to view plan. (PDF - 2MB)

Milestone 4: Implement the Local Climate Action Plan.

Milestone 5: Monitor emission reductions.

Help Stop Global Warming And Earn Money For Amherst!!
The Town of Amherst is currently participating in the Massachusetts Clean Energy Choice campaign.  Residents of Amherst may make a contribution towards the New England Wind Fund to support the development of future wind turbines in the state of Massachusetts.  In turn, the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC) will give matching funds for those donations to be used towards a municipal green energy project.  If 3% of the Town’s population signs up by March 31st, MTC will give the Town of Amherst an additional $50.00 per household for those that have signed on.  This could potentially result in the Town of Amherst receiving $28,000.  To participate in this program fill out the application (on page 2) and mail it to New England Wind Fund.
