Amherst Trash & Recycling Requirements
All residential, commercial, or multifamily property owners, managers, or tenants in Amherst are required to:
- Contract with a licensed waste hauler for at least weekly refuse collection except when a variance has been approved
- Develop and maintain a recycling plan for disposal of recyclable material banned from landfills
- Be responsible for the proper disposal of hazardous wastes and any other material needing special treatment
Local regulations also prohibit private (curbside) haulers from accepting trash containing more than 5% (by volume) of recyclable paper or containers. This means that if your household trash contains more than 5% of recyclable paper or containers, your waste hauler will not pick it up until it is separated properly.
