The Amherst Fire Department provides comprehensive fire, rescue, EMS, and fire prevention services to the Town of Amherst, including the Univeristy of Massachusetts, Amherst College, and Hampshire College, as well as providing EMS services to the neighboring communities of Hadley, Pelham, Leverett, and Shutesbury.
MISSION STATEMENT:
"Enhancing the quality of life in Amherst by providing excellence and professionalism in the delivery of emergency medicine, fire suppression, fire prevention and education, rescue, hazardous materials incident mitigation, and disaster recovery services."
Workforce:
The Amherst Fire Department is made up of three unique forces:
- Permanent Force, (Engine Companies 1 & 2) Full-time career firefighters
- Call Force, (Engine Company 4) Part-time firefighters
- Student Force, (Engine Company 3) Students from local colleges

BURNING PERMITS:
State regulations limit open air burning to the period of January 15th through May 1st every year. For more information on burning permits click here.
Fire Station Committee:
The Fire Station Committee was formed to recommend the number and location of fire stations within the Town. Their final report is available in both Powerpoint and PDf formats.
