The Book Shed encourages the reuse of books by providing an exchange site. Residents may bring unwanted books in good condition, or take books at no charge. Please do not bring textbooks, encyclopedias, Reader's Digest publications or moldy, damaged, or soiled books. Out of courtesy to Transfer Station customers seeking parking, please limit your visit to the Book Shed to 10 minutes.
Christmas Tree Disposal
Tinsel and decoration-free Christmas trees are accepted at no charge at the Transfer Station. Trees larger than 6 feet in diameter or height must be cut into smaller pieces. A curbside Christmas tree pick-up is also conducted by private haulers for their customers.
The Transfer Station offers a drop-off service for shoes and clothing only. Please do not bring bedding.
Hazardous Household Waste Collection
The Town of Amherst offers an annual Fall collection of household hazardous waste. We contract with a state-approved hazardous waste disposal company and accept pre-registration for residents to bring their hazardous waste for proper disposal on a specific day. An amassed quantity of hazardous waste creates unnecessary risks without appropriate containment, so we are unable to collect material in advance of the scheduled date.
All recyclables that can be picked up during curbside recycling may also be deposited at the Transfer Station and Recycling Center at no charge with a Vehicle Sticker or valid student ID.
Many bulky waste items are accepted year-round. Some items have feesassociated with their disposal, while others are covered by the Vehicle Sticker fee.
Sale of Recycling-Related Items
The Transfer Station offers a number of recycling and waste-collection products for sale. Several are also available at the Department of Public Works.
Safe Needle Disposal Program
Amherst residents can purchase "sharps" containers for needles, etc., at the Transfer Station or at the Health Department by appointment. The fee for the container includes the disposal of the filled container with a licensed medical waste hauler. Simply return your filled container to the Transfer Station or the Health Department in Bangs Community Center.
Take It or Leave It
Individuals may drop off or acquire clean, reusable, tag-sale type items at no charge in the Take It or Leave It shed. Out of courtesy to Transfer Station customers seeking parking, please limit your visit to the Take It or Leave It shed to 10 minutes.
