Recreational Marijuana


Amherst is committed to a safe and deliberate implementation of the recreational marijuana law that both protects the health and safety of Amherst residents and respects the 74% of Amherst voters who approved the ballot question. 65% of Amherst residents are below the age of 25, and over 30% are under the age of 20. Amherst’s population is in constant flux, with nearly 5,000 new undergraduate college students arriving at UMass, Amherst College, and Hampshire College each year.

  • Town Review Team memo with recommendations to enter into Host Community Agreement negotiations with three Recreational Marijuana Retail establishments.
  • Community Outreach Meeting for MassMedicum at 6pm on October 9, 2018, at the Hangar Pub and Grill (10 University Drive, Amherst) to discuss a proposed recreational marijuana retail establishment at 85 University Drive.Topics to be discussed at the meeting will include, but not be limited to: 1. Plans for maintaining a secure facility; 2. Plans to prevent diversion to minors; 3. Plans to positively impact the community; and 4. Plans to ensure the establishment will not constitute a nuisance to the community. Interested members of the community are encouraged to ask questions and receive answers from company representatives about the proposed facility and operations. NOTE: Community outreach meetings are required by the state prior to applying for a recreational marijuana license.   • Community Outreach Meeting for Herbology Group, Inc. at 6pm on October 16, 2018, at the Hangar Pub and Grill (10 University Drive, Amherst) to discuss a proposed recreational marijuana retail establishment at 422 Amity Street. Interested members of the community are encouraged to ask questions and receive answers from company representatives about the proposed facility and operations.NOTE: Community outreach meetings are required by the state prior to applying for a recreational marijuana license.   • Community Outreach Meeting for RISE at 6pm on October 1, 2018, in the event space at Bistro 63/The Monkey Bar (63 North Pleasant Street, Amherst) to discuss a proposed recreational marijuana retail establishment at 169 Meadow St. Topics to be discussed at the meeting will include, but not be limited to: the type(s) of Marijuana Establishment to be located at 169 Meadow Street in Amherst; plans for maintaining a secure facility; plans to prevent diversion to minors; plans to positively impact the community; and, plans to ensure the establishment will not constitute a nuisance to the community. Medical Marijuana



The Amherst Select Board has issued letters of support for four medical marijuana dispensaries in town. Each of the four applicants has received their preliminary certificate of registration from the state Department of Health and two have received conditional Special Permits from the Amherst Zoning Board of Appeals.
