Planning and Zoning
Overview The Amherst Planning Department helps to protect and enhance the environmental, economic and social quality of life in Amherst, for its residents and visitors, by creating and implementing appropriate planning initiatives and regulatory mechanisms for the preservation and protection of the Town.
The Planning Department facilitates the regulatory process for development proposals submitted to the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals under the Amherst Zoning Bylaw and Subdivision Regulations. In doing so, planners meet with neighbors and developers, schedule public hearings, and evaluate proposals in relation to the Amherst Master Plan.
The Planning Department also oversees several grant program, such as the Community Development Block Grant program. Planners also provide administrative support to many boards and committees, including the Affordable Housing Trust, Historical Commission, Local Historic District Commission, Disability Access Advisory Committee, and Design Review Board.
