Downtown Amherst Parking Changes Coming November 6th

Change is coming!

You will see longer time limits in some lots giving you enough time for dinner and a movie, shorter time limits in others to encourage turnover for your quick stops, parking machines that work more easily and reliably, and the addition of a smart phone payment option.

There are over 635 parking spaces available to the public in downtown Amherst. This does not include private parking or designated permitted parking on the outskirts of downtown which are reserved for those working or living downtown.

Did you know: There are 70 public parking spaces available behind the CVS store on North Pleasant Street and you can enter the lot from either North Pleasant Street or North Prospect Street? This lot is seldom full!

New Multi-space Meters – at last!

The most visible change will be the installation of new multi-space meters to pay for parking in municipal parking lots. These meters replace the older machines that had caused so much frustration for many of us. They are brighter and easier to understand. The biggest change is that they are “pay by license plate” instead of “pay by numbered space”. So, you won’t need to know the space you parked in, but you will need to know your license plate number when you go to pay.

Did you know: There are 144 public parking spaces in the Boltwood Parking Garage and that there are two levels? The lower level of the parking garage often has parking spaces available.

Now, You Can Pay From Your Smart Phone!

Smart phone users can now pay for parking with the Parkmobile application for a small fee for each transaction. This is the same app that is used on the UMass campus and in the City of Northampton. You can use this at any meter or in any lot.

Did you know: There is a parking lot behind Town Hall that is frequently empty during busy evening hours? The entrance is off of Main Street!

Park a Little Further; Get a Little Exercise; Pay a Little Less

We have adjusted the rates (how much you pay per hour), time limits (how long you can stay in one space), and the hours of enforcement for parking. The goal of these changes is to ensure popular spaces turn over frequently enough so shoppers and visitors can easily find parking. Each meter and lot has signs that indicates the rate, time limits, and hours of enforcement. Please be sure to check signage or the meters to ensure you are complying with the parking limits in each area.

Did you know: Your best chance to find an on street parking space is on Boltwood Avenue near the Lord Jeff Inn or on North Pleasant Street near Kendrick Park?

Tell Us What You Think!

Lastly, we want to know what you think! The volunteer Downtown Parking Working Group has spent over a year working on making downtown parking more accessible to the general public. If you have thoughts or opinions, please email We welcome your feedback.
