[ARCHIVED] Amherst Dog Park Receives $25,000 Stanton Foundation Grant

Dog Park Grant News

The Town of Amherst is the proud recipient of a $25,000 Stanton Foundation grant to fund the design of a new, state-of-the-art dog park.

“I am thrilled by the progress that we are making,” said Jim Pistrang, Chair of the Dog Park Task Force. “Receiving the Stanton Foundation grant is a confirmation of the hard work and commitment on the part of the Task Force and the Town. We are looking forward to the detailed design phase, where we will continue to have open meetings and to solicit feedback from the public. This fall we will be reaching out to begin the formation of a Friends of Amherst Dog Park group, which will ultimately be responsible for the ongoing maintenance and governance of the Park.”

The Town of Amherst has designated a 2-acre Town-owned site at the old landfill off of Old Belchertown Road. The estimated cost of the dog park is $250,000. Amherst Town Meeting voted $90,000 towards this project for the purposes of construction, surveying and site analysis. Town officials remain hopeful that the comprehensive design will lead to a construction grant (to be submitted to Stanton as well).

Amherst Town Manager Paul Bockelman stated, “We hope this design grant is the beginning of a productive relationship with the Stanton Foundation. Kudos to our Town staff for their pursuit of outside funding sources for these worthwhile projects in Town.” He added, “We thank dedicated town residents who volunteer their time to serve on the Dog Park Task Force. They have been working for more than a year on site selection, conceptual design, and the development of a Friends Group for the new park.”

The project timeline is for design to be completed later this fall (2018) and for construction to begin in 2019.
One of the Stanton Foundation’s mission is to encourage positive dog/human relationship and to support the development of enclosed dog parks. The Stanton Foundation is a private foundation established by Frank Stanton, a long-time president of Columbia Broadcasting System. (
