[ARCHIVED] "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" Campaign Urges Drivers to Plan Ahead for a Sober Ride

The Amherst Police Department will be joining the Massachusetts State Police and other area municipal police departments as part of the national "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" Initiative. This mobilization is made possible through support from the Highway Safety Division of the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security and is an important step in helping to keep the roads in Amherst safe.

The primary goal of this campaign is to encourage drivers who are impaired from drinking alcohol or using marijuana to find an alternative way to make it home safely. About 35% of all traffic crash fatalities in the United States involve impaired drivers. Studies have shown that impairment dramatically increased when alcohol or other drugs are combined.

"Impaired driving is dangerous to our community, and it can easily be avoided by planning ahead," said Chief Scott Livingstone. "Please consider utilizing public transportation, a rideshare service, or designating a sober driver if you have been drinking alcohol or using marijuana."

Grant funds will be utilized to increase patrols during the national campaign that will continue until August 31, 2018.

Questions regarding this initiative can be forwarded to Sergeant Todd S. Lang at 413-259-3160 or
