Now that the 2020-2021 Winter Storm Season has begun, the Town of Amherst Department of Public Works would like to remind citizens of the following snow removal/clean up measures:
- Sidewalks in front of residences and businesses are the owner’s responsibility (please see Bylaws HERE)
- The Town does make one courtesy pass with the sidewalk plow of some sidewalks in Town (please see the map HERE) but that does not alleviate the owners of their obligation. This is also done on the DPW’s timeline, which may, or not be, when the snow has completely stopped.
- The Town will skip portions of the sidewalk if homeowners leave trash barrels, vehicles, or other items in the way which includes on their driveway between the sidewalk entrances.
- Homeowners are encouraged to dig out their nearest fire hydrant.
Reminder that homeowners and contractors are not allowed to shovel, plow, or snow blow snow back onto public roads. This includes contractors leaving behind ‘windrows’ as they plow across the roadway.
If, in the unfortunate event, that your mailbox or property is damaged during town plowing operations, please submit a Service Request through SeeClickFix on the Town Website within 48 hours of the damage so that we can assess it in a timely manner. Damage caused by a direct plow strike, not snow coming off the plow blade, will be considered for repair/replacement.
