[ARCHIVED] Amherst Reaches Homebound Individuals with Vaccine

Two town staff members stand in front of ambulance with masks on

The Town of Amherst has been coordinating efforts to reach homebound individuals in a commitment to ensure they have access to a vaccine. Amherst Public Health Director Emma Dragon, Fire Chief Tim Nelson and Senior Center Director Mary Beth Ogulewicz have been planning and organizing for a number of weeks to identify and serve homebound individuals in Amherst and eight other Eastern Hampshire County communities.

As of Tuesday March 3rd, the Town of Amherst has delivered over 5,050 vaccine doses to eligible individuals.  Now, after long days at the main Bangs Center clinic, Dragon, Assistant Amherst Fire Chief Jeffrey Olmstead and Amherst Firefighter Paramedic Matt Chipman get into an ambulance and visit those who are unable to leave their homes to receive the vaccine.

“We value the vulnerable and underserved individuals within our community and feel committed to getting them vaccinated" said Dragon. Working with eight Eastern Hampshire County communities, town officials in their respective departments, as well as state officials, a large scale plan has been put in place by the Amherst team.

It is expected to take several weeks to complete the plan to vaccinate the over 100 homebound individuals that have been indentified.

If you know of someone who is homebound and may qualify for this program in Amherst, Belchertown, Granby, Hadley, Hatfield, Pelham, South Hadley or Ware please call your local senior center or board of health for assistance.

For those eligible residing in Amherst or Pelham, please contact the Amherst Senior Center (413) 259-3060.
