In September, Amherst artists and arts and cultural organizations will have two opportunities to learn about updated grant funding opportunities. The Amherst Cultural Council (ACC) will present its updated grant application guidelines at a public meeting at the Jones Library on Tuesday, September 14 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. For those who cannot attend the in-person meeting, the ACC will repeat this meeting via Zoom on Friday, September 17 from 12-1 p.m. See below for a link to the Zoom meeting.
The ACC distributes state lottery funds in grants to artists and arts and cultural institutions for projects that benefit the greater Amherst community. The grant application portal will be open from September 1, 2021 through October 15, 2021. These public meetings will give potential applicants the opportunity to learn more about the ACC’s granting guidelines, and to have questions answered in an open dialogue.
The public meetings will also be an opportunity for Amherst artists and arts organizations to share the ways in which the COVID pandemic affected them directly. According to the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC), Massachusetts nonprofit and municipal cultural organizations report an overwhelming $588,334,079 in lost revenue since March 2020, while the Commonwealth’s working creatives: individual artists, teaching artists, and scientists/humanists cite $30,403,616 in lost personal income due to the pandemic in Mass Cultural Council’s most recent COVID-19 impact survey of the cultural sector.
Information gathered at these sessions will be used to inform the ACC’s grant-making priorities going forward, and will also be shared with Amherst Town officials for consideration in their efforts to help the Amherst community recover from the pandemic. Members of the Amherst Cultural District and Business Improvement District, as well as other Town officials, are invited to attend, along with Amherst artists and arts and cultural organizations.
