[ARCHIVED] Town Participates: National Stand Against Racism

The Town of Amherst is pleased to be able to actively participate in the national YWCA Stand Against Racism scheduled to be conducted on April 30, 2010. In Amherst, the program is managed by Russ Vernon-Jones. Events are scheduled at the First Congregational Church, 165 Main Street, Amherst, MA At 11:45 AM, 1:00 PM and 7:15 PM, a film entitled, “Race in the Age of Obama,” a conversation between African American activist Eva Patterson and white activist, Tim Wise will be shown, followed by group discussion. Visitors to the First Congregational Church will be invited to share a story about the effects of race and racism has had on their lives. Visitors will also be asked to sign a pledge that commits the individual to social justice and the fight to end racism. In Town Hall, Town of Amherst employees will be asked to sign a pledge that will be delivered to the program organizers.

Reynolds Winslow, Chair of the Amherst Human Rights Commission said, “I am delighted to be able to participate and endorse the “Stand Against Racism” program. This important program will continue to focus attention and energy to the great challenge to eliminate racism in America.”
