[ARCHIVED] Town Introduces Online Permits & Licenses

The Town of Amherst successfully went live with a new online permitting and licensing portal earlier this month. The Town has started inviting customers and businesses to apply for permits and licenses online via this new portal, which is powered by OpenGov.  

Amherst Building Commissioner Robert Morra said, “We are excited to announce improvements to the permitting and licensing process. We are confident that our new technology will enhance the customer experience and streamline internal workflow for the over 4,500 permits and licenses issued annually from the Inspections office alone.” 

With this new portal, the Town now offers dozens of additional permits and licenses online, making it easier for residents and businesses to apply for and receive permits online. This includes building, electrical, gas and plumbing permits; rental registration; health licenses; parking permits, fire department permits; planning, conservation and many more. The Town will continue to add additional applications through the new portal in the coming weeks and months. 

Amherst Business Improvement District Executive Director Gabrielle Gould stated, “We look forward to an accessible and streamlined online process for our local businesses to get the licenses and permits they need in order to operate. Providing a central, online platform makes this easier and more efficient for all.” 

Frequent permitting customer Bill Killough-Hill from Pioneer Valley Photovoltaics recently submitted his first project on the portal saying, “Doing the application through the portal for the first time was quick and easy!” 

Town Manager Paul Bockelman added, “An important goal of the Town is improving the delivery of services to residents and businesses; the new portal brings Amherst closer to achieving this.” 

With the implementation of this new online portal the Town of Amherst enables a variety of capabilities to manage permitting, licensing, and code enforcement, including: 

  • Automating operational processes associated with permitting, licensing and code enforcement.  
  • Providing businesses and residents with access to critical information surrounding the process. 
  • Reviewing, approving, and issuing permits and licenses from a single digital platform; and the ability to schedule inspections with ease. 
  • Improving staff and community insights for more informed decision-making. 

The Town of Amherst now joins more than 1,000 public sector organizations leveraging OpenGov to revolutionize work processes with cloud-based software designed specifically for the needs of government. The new online permit portal provides the necessary technology to better serve our staff, customers, contractors, and businesses.
