[ARCHIVED] Warning to Hikers and Residents of Middle Street

Posted 05/04/2010

Warning to Hikers and Residents of Middle Street

During the past few days reports of an aggressive coyote have been received by town staff and the Amherst Police Department. The coyote has approached hikers and people walking their dogs along the KC Trail west of Middle Street. Please do not approach this animal and make every effort to avoid contact with it. Although we do not suspect rabies, the animal seems very aggressive, particularly towards dogs. The KC Trail from Middle Street to Potwine Lane has been closed until further notice. Animal Welfare Officer Carol Hepburn is coordinating efforts to remove the coyote with the Amherst and the Massachusetts Environmental Police.

Questions should be directed to Carol Hepburn at 413-478-7084.
