(February 3, 2011) Today Amherst Town Manager John Musante announced his appointment of Sanford “Sandy” M. Pooler to the position of Finance Director. Mr. Pooler will begin his duties in Amherst on February 14 and will earn an annual salary of $94,102.

“I am delighted to have recruited someone with Sandy Pooler’s breadth of municipal administration and finance experience to join our team as Finance Director,” said Town Manager John Musante. “Sandy’s leadership and communication skills coupled with his deep knowledge of budget and fiscal policy best practices will be a tremendous asset to me and the Town as we tackle the many fiscal and other challenges facing the Town.”

As Finance Director, Mr. Pooler will manage and coordinate the activities of the Finance Department (Accounting, Assessing, Collections, Treasury), oversee the development and monitoring of the Town’s operating and capital budgets, and participate as a key member of the Town’s senior management team.

Mr. Pooler has over twenty years of state and local government management experience, including four years as Chief Administrative Officer and eight years as Budget Officer with the City of Newton, MA. He previously worked for many years as Staff Director to the Committee on State Administration in the Massachusetts House of Representatives and is a past president of the Massachusetts Government Finance Officers Association. Mr. Pooler is a graduate of Dartmouth College and also holds a law degree from the UCLA School of Law and a master’s degree in public administration from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.

“Amherst is a beautiful town with a well deserved record of solid financial management, innovative government, and strong community involvement. I am looking forward to working with John Musante, his staff, and all the members of town government,” Mr. Pooler said.

Since his appointment as Town Manager on October 1, Musante continued to fill the role of Finance Director temporarily until a new person was hired for that position.
