UMASS Athletics showed their gratitude to Amherst Police Officers Lopez, Corsetti, Guiles, Soverino and Guiterrez at the February 16th, 2011 Minutemen Basketball Game against Duquesne. Inviting them to center court at half time, our veterans were greeted with a standing ovation from the attendees. The Amherst Police Department is proud of the service that these officers provide to the town of Amherst each and every day, and to their commitment and service to their country. Detective Janet Lopez:
A member of the Amherst Police Department since 1999, Lopez is a Sergeant 1st Class with the Massachusetts Army National Guard’s 747th Military Police Company. She has been serving with the unit since 1995. Her 1st deployment was in 2003 to Kabul, Afghanistan, where her unit trained the Afghan army. Lopez was again deployed in 2009 to Al Anbar Province, Iraq where her unit trained local Iraqi police departments.
Officer Dominick Corsetti:
A member of the the Amherst Police Department since 2005, Corsetti served in the Massachusetts Army National Guard’s 747th Military Police Company from 1999-2007, obtaining the rank of Sergeant. After 9/11 Corsetti was deployed stateside for one year assisting the U.S. Marshall’s Service and the Massachusetts State Police with airport security at Logan International Airport, Boston. In January of 2003 until September of 2003 Corsetti was redeployed to Kabul, Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom.
Officer Hunter Guiles:
A member of the Amherst Police Department since 2008, Guiles served in the United States Marine Corps from 2001-2005, obtaining the rank of Sergeant. Guiles was deployed from 2003 through 2004 with a U.S. Marine Corps Fleet Anti-Terrorism Team (F.A.S.T.) Company throughout Iraq, including Baghdad and Basra. Guiles was redeployed for a second year from 2004 through 2005 with the 3rd Battalion 3rd Marine Division serving in Khost and Galalabad, Afghanistan.
Officer Scott Soverino:
A member of the Amherst Police Department since 2010, Soverino served in the United States Air Force from 2002 through 2008 obtaining the rank of Sergeant. In 2004 Scott was deployed to Kirkuk, Iraq where he conducted town patrols and convoy escorts with his security police unit.
In 2007 Soverino was redeployed to Camp Bucca, Basra, Iraq, again serving with his security police unit conducting town patrols and convoy escorts.
Officer Carlos Gutierrez:
A member of the Amherst Police Department since 2008, Gutierrez served in the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Infantry Division, United States Marine Corps from 1998 through 2002. Gutierrez is a Sergeant currently serving with the 1st Battalion, 181st Infantry Company of the Massachusetts Army National Guard since 2006. In 2001 through 2002, Gutierrez served with the United States Marine Corps in and around Kandahar, Afghanistan. Guiterrez was redeployed to Baghdad, Iraq with his Army National Guard unit in 2007 through 2008. Gutierrez was again deployed in 2010 with his Army National Guard unit to Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan. At the time of this recognition from UMASS, Guitierrez was on a 2 week leave from his deployment. He has since returned to Afghanistan and is due to complete his deployment in July 2011.
