For Immediate Release
Jones Library Trustees Seek Applicants for Open Seat on Board; Applications Due by March 31st
An open seat on the Board of Trustees of The Jones Library, Inc., and of the Amherst Town Library will be filled on Monday, April 4, 2011, at a joint meeting of the Trustees and of the Amherst Select Board at 6 p.m. in the Town Room of Amherst Town Hall. The Town Library comprises The Jones Library and its Munson Memorial and North Amherst branches.
U.S. citizens of voting age who live in Amherst are eligible. The deadline for applying is Thursday, March 31st. Select Board members and Trustees will question candidates orally at their joint meeting on April 4, and will chose a new Trustee immediately by roll call vote.
The April 4 selection is to fill the term of former Trustee and former Board President Kathleen Wang until the Town Election of 2012. Ms. Wang’s resignation reached Town Hall too late to go on the March 29th Town election ballot. In such a case, selection by majority vote of the Select Board and Trustees is the Massachusetts procedure.
The Trustees and Select Board encourage applicants of diverse backgrounds and experience. Application is by email to the Select Board atSelectBoard@amherstma.gov. Application letters may also be submitted by mail to: Select Board, Town Hall, 4 Boltwood Ave. Amherst MA 01002. Candidates should explain why they want to be Library Trustees; what skills and qualifications they would bring to the position; and what vision they have for the Library.
One of the Trustees’ most vital responsibilities is to hire and supervise the Library Director. Candidates should explain what they would look for in the new Director whom Trustees plan to hire this year.
Library Trustees are fiduciaries, with legal responsibility for the prudent use of the Library’s Endowment and other resources. With the Library Director, Trustees develop Library budgets. They are responsible for approving these and advocating for them, as well as for raising funds to support the Library both immediately and for the long term. They create Library policies and oversee their implementation, and represent the Library at public events that include regional and statewide library-related meetings.
The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners provides additional information about Trustees’ role and responsibilities at: http://mblc.state.ma.us/advisory/trustees/trustees_handbook/.
Each Jones Library Trustee serves on a standing committee of the Board and usually on one or more additional committees. Regular Trustee meetings are on the first Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m., usually at the Jones Library. There are additional meetings as needed, particularly during the budget season from January through Spring Town Meeting in April.
Two Trustees serve on the Town’s Joint Capital Planning Committee (JCPC) and Budget Coordinating Group (BCG). These meet throughout the budget season, usually during morning business hours.
All Library Board meetings are open to the public. Possible candidates are cordially invited to attend upcoming meetings on the Tuesdays of March 8th and 22nd, at 7 p.m., in the Trustees’ Room on the third floor of the Jones Library, 43 Amity Street. The front hall elevator goes to the Trustees’ Room.
