Amherst Town Manager John Musante met with the Town's emergency management team this afternoon to continue preparations for Hurricane Irene.
Here is our latest information:
? The storm will produce heavy rain and strong winds intensifying after midnight and continuing through Sunday. Please stay off the roads to assist public safety personnel.
? Localized flooding is expected; avoid low lying areas. Areas most susceptible in Amherst include: Pelham Road/Main Street, West Pomeroy Lane, Station Road, Cottage Street and Route 9 at Gatehouse Road.
? Be aware that there is a danger of falling tree limbs even after the storm has passed.
? Stay at least ten (10) feet away from downed power lines.
? We do not anticipate any interruption of water service for Amherst residents.
? A regional Red Cross Emergency Shelter will be open for people and companion animals at Smith Vocational High School in Northampton beginning at 5 p.m. today and will remain open as long as necessary.
? We ask residents to dial 911 only in true emergencies.
? To report a power outage, call Western Mass Electric Co. (WMECo) 413-781-4300.
? For non-emergency information, call 259-3000.
? Residents should remain in their homes, as that is the safest place to be during and immediately after the storm.
? Stay tuned to local news outlets and the Town website: www.amherstma.gov for up to date information.
