[ARCHIVED] CVS Pharmacy Offers Expired Medicine Disposal Option

A new program at area CVS Pharmacies allows customers to mail unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medication to a Texas facility for disposal. The postage-paid envelopes cost $3.99 each. Controlled substances are excluded from the program.

The program simplifies the safe disposal of unwanted medication. Unwanted medicine collection events are costly and complicated to arrange, so many municipalities advise residents to carefully dispose of medications in the trash (see A to Z Disposal Guide on Recycling page). The CVS program ensures that the medications will get incinerated, which is the safest way to dispose of pharmaceuticals. In April 2011, the Amherst Police and Health Departments conducted a collection event as part of Federal Drug Enforcement Administration's Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The CVS program provides a safe, year-round alternative disposal method.
