The Town of Amherst will be picking up tree debris from public shade trees along the Town streets and roads over the next two weeks. Shade trees are trees that are within the public road right of way. Residents may contact the Amherst DPW at 259-3050 if there are questions if a tree is a shade tree or not.
The Town will not be picking up tree debris from private property. Any tree debris placed on the side of the road from private trees will not be collected.
Amherst residents may take tree debris to the Amherst Transfer Station for disposal. The cost for disposal is $100.00 per ton. Residents will not need a Transfer Station access sticker to dispose of wood debris from this storm. There is also no size restriction on the wood debris that may be brought to the Transfer Station. The Transfer Station is open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. The Transfer station will also have extended days of operation to receive wood waste. The additional days of operation will be Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:00am to 2:00pm from November 2nd to 11th. If this service for wood waste disposal is needed beyond November 11th the Town will extend the extra days of operation.
The restriction to pick up only public shade tree debris is based on federal reimbursement guidelines. Mixing public and private debris will jeopardize the Town’s reimbursement requests. Please be aware that depending on the type of disaster declaration this area receives private residents and businesses may be eligible to recover damage costs.
