Amherst School Committee Vacancy Will Be Filled Monday February 6, 2012 at Amherst Select Board Meeting; Statements of Interest Due by 4:00 pm Thursday February 2, 2012

A vacancy on the Amherst School Committee will be filled on Monday February 6, 2012, at a joint meeting of the Select Board and the remaining members of the Amherst School Committee. This joint meeting will take place at 6:45 pm during the regularly scheduled Select Board meeting in the second floor Town Room of Amherst Town Hall, 4 Boltwood Avenue. The meeting will be broadcast live by Amherst Media on channel 17.

Vacancies in elected Town-wide office are governed by MGL Chapter 41 Section 11. See also Amherst School Committee policy BBBE (formerly 110.06) and the recent Select Board process document for additional details. A roll call vote of both bodies is required, and at least five positive votes must be made for the selected individual, regardless of how many members of the Select Board and Amherst School Committee are present.

The selected individual may be sworn in at Amherst Town Hall during business hours on Tuesday February 7, 2012 and will serve only through the Annual Town Election on Tuesday April 3, 2012. If the selected individual also wants to be on the ballot for a three-year term, s/he must follow the same process as any other candidate for Town-wide office, including the filing of official nomination papers with the signatures of at least fifty registered voters of Amherst with the Town Clerk’s office by 5:00 pm on Wednesday February 14, 2012.

The new Amherst School Committee member also serves on the Amherst-Pelham Regional School Committee. Check the schools’ website for already scheduled meetings of the Amherst and Amherst-Pelham Regional School Committees. Depending on schedules and interest, it may be important for the new Amherst School Committee member to also serve as one of two Amherst School Committee members on either the Town of Amherst Joint Capital Planning Committee (JCPC) or the Town of Amherst Budget Coordinating Group (BCG). Those two bodies generally meet during morning business hours throughout the budget season.

Statements of Interest are due by 4:00 pm Thursday February 2, 2012. Include a summary of qualifications, experience, and reasons for interest in serving on the Amherst School Committee. Statements can be submitted either by email or in hard copy, and will be provided to all Select Board members and the remaining Amherst School Committee members as they are received. Email submissions (preferred) can be made to Debbie Westmoreland or to Debra Roussel. Hard copy submissions should be dropped off at the Superintendent's Office located in the Amherst Regional Middle School at 170 Chestnut Street, or at the Select Board Office located in Amherst Town Hall.
